In 2017, the Fireball adware infected 250 million machines after being downloaded as freeware. The spyware hijacked browsers, forcing consumers to change their default search engine to one that looked like established search engines but was tracking their web traffic for Rafotech, a Beijing-based digital marketing firm. The spyware may remotely execute any code on affected PCs or download new software.
